Abstract:

This collection consists of the North American Christian Convention records. The North American Christian Convention ran from 1927 to 2018 when it changed to become Spire. These records include planning and research materials and materials relating to running the convention. Of special note are records relating to Leonard G. Wymore, the first executive director, and records of the various committees. In addition, the collection contains promotional items from most of the conventions.

Administrative History:

First held in 1927, the North American Christian Convention was a gathering of the independent Christian Churches/Churches of Christ (“4 C’s”). As such, it was not a denominational meeting, but a meeting highlighted by discussions, exhibits, worship services, and preaching. Beginning in 1950, the convention was held annually until 2018, after which the convention changed to become Spire. Leonard G. Wymore was the first full-time convention director, with offices in Cincinnati, OH, beginning in 1963. Following Wymore were Rod Huron (convention director, 1986-1997), Dusty Rubeck (executive director, 1997-1999), Terry Wuske (managing director, 1998-2002), Allan Dunbar (executive director, 2002-2009), and Larry Collins (managing director, 2002-2019). The convention has also historically had a committee, with women joining in the 1990s. The board of stewards was established in 1999. The convention has been held in conjunction with other similar meetings at times, including a long tenure with Bible Bowl, a youth Bible quiz competition.

Arrangement:

The collection was arranged by committees and other subjects by combining the boxes from the accession. Most series, and therefore most of the collection, are in chronological order. The collection contains seven series: Board of Stewards, Committees, Governance Documents, Planning, Promotion, Letters and Articles, and Subject Files. The Committees series contains five subseries: Executive Committee, Continuation Committee, Convention Committee, Other Committees, and Convention Files. The Promotional Materials series contains three subseries: Convention Materials, Publications, and Other Publications. The Planning series is arranged alphabetically by folder title with the spec books starting with the year at the end of the series. The Other Committees subseries is arranged alphabetically by name of committee and then chronologically within the name. The Subject Files series is arranged in alphabetical order by folder title. All other series and subseries are arranged chronologically.

Scope and Content Note:

The records of the North American Christian Convention Executive Director are arranged in seven series: Board of Stewards, Committees, Governance Documents, Planning, Promotional Materials, Letters and Articles, and Subject Files. The Committees series contains five subseries: Executive Committee, Continuation Committee, Convention Committee, Other Committees, and Convention Files. The Promotional Materials series contains three subseries: Convention Materials, Publications, and Other Publications.

The Governance Documents series spans 1998 to 2012 and contains governance documents for those years of the convention. The Planning Files series spans 1964 to 2013 and includes undated material. This series contains information used to plan the convention, including meeting information and “spec books.” The Promotional Materials series spans 1927 to 2017 and includes undated material, and the series is further divided into three subseries: Convention Materials, Publications, and Other Publications. The Convention Materials subseries spans 1927 to 2017 and includes undated materials. It contains publicity and promotional items and programs for the convention. The Publications subseries spans 1926 to 2016 and includes undated materials. This subseries contains publications about the NACC, including references in The Christian Standard, The Lookout, and The Update, the NACC publication. The Other Publications subseries spans 1959 to 2006 and includes undated material. It contains references in other publications not in the Publications subseries and clippings about the NACC. The Letters and Articles series spans 1946 to 2006 and includes undated material. It contains correspondence and articles pertaining to the convention.
