Abstract:

Dean Everest Walker (1898-1988) was a preacher, church historian and academic administrator from the Christian Churches/Churches of Christ. He also served as president of Milligan College (now Milligan University) and Emmanuel Christian Seminary. This collection contains his personal papers, including his sermon notes, writings, and thoughts on other writings.

Biographical Note:

Dean Everest Walker (1898-1988) was a preacher, church historian and academic administrator from the Christian Churches/Churches of Christ. Walker earned degrees from Bethany College (B.A.), Tri-Cities College (B.A.) and Butler University (B.D., M.A.) After a season of doctoral study at the University of Edinburgh, Walker taught church history at Butler University from 1926 to 1950. That year he became president of Milligan College (now Milligan University), where he would play an important role in bringing the institution financial stability and regional accreditation. In 1965, Walker became the founding president of Emmanuel School of Religion until 1969, when he resumed teaching church history for eighteen more years at Emmanuel. He died two years later.

Walker’s main concern was to bring the Stone-Campbell plea for catholic apostolicity into the twentieth century. He believed that the key to achieving this was to honor new and diverse ways of expressing the apostolic “tradition of Christ,” which is ultimately the organizing principal of the faith. As a churchman, he sought to bring about unity by actively working with both liberal and conservative factions of the movement. As an academic, Walker dedicated himself to articulating the nature of “tradition of Christ” and to identifying its presence in the various expressions of the faith throughout history. In total, his ecclesial and scholarly efforts ultimately found their most effective outlet in the classroom. Walker left an indelible mark on all who studied under him -- men and women whose commitment to unity and restoration can be traced back directly to their great teacher.

Arrangement:

The collection was processed minimally. The original order (alphabetical) and original series was kept. Walker, Personal Things, Sermons, Writings, Duplicate Writings, and Audio. The Sermons Series is divided into three subseries: Topics, Funerals, Special Occasions.
