Abstract:

Benjamin Harrison Taylor was born on August 4, 1888 in Johnson City and died on March 26, 1930. He was a 1911 graduate of Milligan College (now Milligan University) who became a local lawyer. This collection contains his diplomas, a few photographs, and one copy of The Milligan Alumnus.

Biographical Note:

Benjamin Harrison Taylor was born on August 4, 1888 in Johnson City and died on March 26, 1930. He graduated from Milligan in 1911 and the National Law School in 1915. He practiced law with Judge Thad A. Cox in Johnson City.

Arrangement:

Scope and Content Note:

The Benjamin Harrison Taylor Collection contains two diplomas, four black and white photographs – one from Maryville College and the other three from Milligan College, and an issue of The Milligan Alumnus. The materials primarily date between 1906 and 1911, with one item from 1915 and another from 1929. This collection has been divided into three series. Series I: Diplomas contains two framed diplomas. The first diploma is from Milligan College (now Milligan University) and conferred upon Benjamin Harrison Taylor the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy. It is dated 1911. The second diploma is from The National University in Washington, D.C. (now the National Law Center at The George Washington University). This diploma conferred upon Ben H. Taylor the degree of Bachelor of Laws and is dated 1915. Series II: Photographs contains four black and white photographs. These photographs have been assigned accession numbers and placed in mylar. Three of these photographs depict student groups at Milligan College. Photo number 91- 001-0002-00093A is of the 1909-1910 Ossolarian Literary Society. Photo number 91-00- 0002-00066B is an undated picture of the women’s basketball team. Photo number 91- 001-0002-00004E is a 1910 picture of the Milligan student body in front of the south face of the Classroom Building. The fourth photograph is of a 1906 women’s sports team at Maryville College. This photograph has not been assigned an accession number, though it has been placed in mylar. Series III: Alumni Publication contains one issue of the Milligan alumni publication The Milligan Alumnus dated May 1929.

The Benjamin Harrison Taylor collection was donated to Milligan College (now Milligan University) in late May 2005 by Dr. Harrison Taylor. The collection was brought to the Archives and Special Collections by Dr. Mark Matson on June 2, 2005.
