Abstract:

Dean E. Walker served as the president of Milligan College (now Milligan University) from 1950 to 1968. This collection is mostly from his time as present of Milligan, including correspondence, records, reports, and information on the college.

Biographical Note:

Dean Everest Walker (1898-1988) was a preacher, church historian, and academic administrator from the Christian Churches/Churches of Christ. Walker earned degrees from Bethany College (B.A.), Tri-Cities College (B.A.) and Butler University (B.D., M.A.) After a season of doctoral study at the University of Edinburgh, Walker taught church history at Butler University from 1926 to 1950. That year he became president of Milligan College (now Milligan University), where he would play an important role in bringing the institution financial stability and regional accreditation. In 1956, Walker became the founding president of Emmanuel School of Religion until 1969, when he resumed teaching church history for eighteen more years at Emmanuel. He died two years later. “Dr. Dean E. Walker came to the presidency in January 1950 from a 25 year professorship at the Butler University School of Religion. Recognizing the need of the small college to play an increasingly large part in the educational program of the country, the College adopted a long-range development program. Students were enlisted from a larger area, encompassing most of the States and several foreign countries.

During Dr. Walker’s administration the campus was expanded to more than 135 acres of land. New buildings included the Student Union Building, Sutton Hall, Webb Hall, the P.H. Welshimer Memorial Library, the Seeger Memorial Chapel, and Hart Hall.

On November 1, 1960, Milligan received the Quality Improvement Award administered by the Association of American Colleges for the United States Steel Foundation. On December 1, 1960, Milligan College was admitted into membership in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.” (https://www.milligan.edu/about/history/)

Arrangement:

It is unknown when the Dean Walker Presidential Papers came into the archives at Milligan. The oldest finding aid in archives files lists an accession number from 1985 but notes that the year of accession is unknown. A second accession number was recorded in 2007 simply to record an accession number and assign a collection number. Box lists date back to at least 1999 in the archives internal files. At some point, it appears that there were 47 cubic foot boxes (record boxes) that were then divided up into manuscript boxes. In 2023, partially as part of space rearrangement of the archives, archivist Katherine Banks reboxed the collection into cubic foot boxes and at the same time, identified series and rearranged folders as necessary.

Scope and Content Note:

The presidential papers of Dean Walker are divided into seven series: Board of Trustees, Buildings, CASC (Council for the Advancement of Small Colleges), Correspondence, Faculty, Financial, and Subject Files. The Buildings series is further broken down into three subseries: General Files, Chapel, and Library. The CASC series is further broken down into four series: General, Correspondence, Meetings, and Newsletters. The Correspondence series is further broken down into seven subseries: Campus Activities, Churches, Financial, Form Letters, Individual, Institutional and Subject, and Students. The Faculty series is further broken down into three subseries: Faculty Meetings, Personnel Files (which is restricted), and General Files. The Financial series is further broken down into two subseries: Debt and General Files. The Subject Files series is further broken down into five subseries: Colleges, Commencement, Ministry and Churches, Speeches and Writings, and General Files.

The Board of Trustees series spans 1948 to 1970 and contains undated material. It contains minutes and reports relating to the Board of Trustees and its various counterparts.

The Buildings series spans 1948 to 1968 and contains undated material. It is further broken down into three subseries. The General Files subseries spans 1951 to 1968 and contains undated material. This subseries has information on various buildings and grounds projects and information (often financial). The Chapel subseries spans 1963 to 1968 and contains undated material. It includes information on what would become Seeger Chapel. The Library subseries spans 1948 to 1967 and contains undated material. It includes information on what would become the P.H. Welshimer Memorial Library and its workings.

The CASC (Council for the Advancement of Small Colleges) series spans 1956 to 1968 and contains undated material. It is further broken down into four series. The General subseries spans 1957 to 1967, contains undated material, and covers files that did not fit into the other subseries, including news releases and information on a testing program. The Correspondence subseries spans 1956 to 1968 and contains correspondence related to CASC. The Meetings subseries spans 1956 to 1967 and includes information from various meetings, board meetings, and workshops for CASC. The Correspondence series spans 1938 to 1972 and contains undated material. It contains several linear feet of correspondence to and from Walker, including with many notable people – Toyozo Nakarai, Fred Norris, Frank Knight, J. C. Penney, Francis Gary Powers, B. Carroll Reece, T. K. Smith, Robert L. Taylor, Fred Thompson, and many ministers in the Christian Churches, to name a few. The Institutional and Subject subseries spans 1938 to 1968 and includes undated material. This subseries includes correspondence and items related to various businesses and on particular subjects. The Students subseries spans 1951 to 1965 and contains correspondence with current and prospective students.

The Faculty series spans 1937 to 1973 and contains undated material. It is further broken down into three subseries: Faculty Meetings, Personnel Files, and General Files. The Faculty Meetings subseries spans 1950 to 1970 and contains undated material. This subseries contains minutes and other items relating to faculty meetings. The Personnel Files subseries spans 1951 to 1966 and contains undated material. This subseries is restricted and contains sensitive material on personnel matters, tenure, and contracts. The General Files subseries spans 1937 to 1973 and contains undated material. It contains more general files on faculty matters.

The Financial subseries spans 1942 to 1967 and contains undated material. It is further broken down into two subseries: Debt and General Files. The Debt subseries spans 1953 to 1967 and contains undated material. It contains information related to the financial debt of the school. The General Files subseries spans 1942 to 1967 and contains undated material. This subseries contains the other financial information. Financial information is also found in other series and subseries.

The Subject Files series spans 1927 to 1973 and contains undated material. It is further divided into five series: Colleges, Commencement, Ministry and Churches, Speeches and Writings, and General Files. The Colleges subseries spans 1954 to 1968 and contains undated material. It has files on various Christian Church colleges and a few other colleges, as well as college-related organizations. The Commencement subseries spans 1951 to 1968 and contains files on various commencement programs, including speakers. The Ministry and Churches subseries spans 1951 to 1967 and contains undated material. This subseries contains information on ministers and churches that Walker and/or Milligan had a relationship with. The Speeches and Writings subseries spans 1947 to 1967 and contains undated material. It contains speeches and other writings by Walker. Finally, the General Files series spans 1927 to 1973 and contains undated material. This subseries has files on a variety of subjects that did not necessarily fit elsewhere or were subject files.

Collection is open for research, with some exceptions. Folders that are restricted will be noted with a red [RESTRICTED] notation. Additionally, the Personnel Files subseries is restricted until one hundred years from the latest date on the folder.

The archivist reserves the right to determine on a case-by-case basis if certain folders within the collection that have been requested for viewing cannot be made available due to various restriction compliance, including but not limited to student information, private personal information, and organizational information of a restricted nature.
