Abstract:

Robert F. Hull, Jr., was a long-time professor of Greek and New Testament at Emmanuel Christian Seminary, as well as serving a life-time of ministry. This collection contains many of Hull’s writings, including sermons and lectures.

Biographical Note:

Robert F. Hull, Jr., was born in 1943 in Welch, West Viriginia. He received a degree in Bible and History from Milligan College (now Milligan University) in 1964, a Master of Divinity degree from Emmanuel School of Religion (now Emmanuel Christian Seminary at Milligan University) in 1971, and his Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1977. Hull served as a minister, and then served as a professor of Greek and New Testament at Emmanuel from 1977 to 2010. He married his wife Loretta in 1964 and had three children: Laura, Eric, and Tempa. Hull passed away in 2022.

Arrangement:

The collection is built of donations from Loretta Hull, wife of Robert Hull, and donations from Susan Higgins. Some items were physical, some were physical that the family requested be duplicated and returned and were thus digitized, and some were digital on an external hard drive. The digitized and born-digital items are stored in the library’s server. The arrangement is thus by type: I. Series: Physical Files, 1966-2021, undated; II. Series: Digitized Files, 1968-2021, undated; III. Series: Born-Digital Files, 2000-2021. The Physical Files are further divided into seven subseries: 1. Subseries: Class Notes, 1978-2016, undated ; 2. Subseries: Writings and Speeches, 1980-2017, undated; 3. Subseries: Funerals and Tributes, 1990-2020; 4. Subseries: Sermons, 1966-2021, undated; 5. Subseries: Meditations and Prayers, 1970-2020, undated; 6. Subseries: Emmanuel, 1986-2015, undated; 7. Subseries: Subject Files, 1973-2017, undated. With the exception of the Sermons subseries, which is ordered chronologically, the series and subseries are ordered alphabetically. The Born-Digital Files series had minimal processing to preserve original order. Empty folders and duplicates were removed, and Individual documents were placed into a folder at the end. Additionally, a photocopy of Annotated Bibliography of the Textual Criticism of the New Testament (1955) by Bruce M. Metzger was removed, as it did not have any notes from Hull in it.

Scope and Content Note:

The papers of Robert F. Hull are divided into three series: Physical Files, Digitized Files, and Born-Digital Files. The Physical Files series is further divided into seven subseries: Class Notes, Writings and Speeches, Funerals and Tributes, Sermons, Meditations and Prayers, Emmanuel, and Subject Files.

The Physical Files series spans 1966 to 2021 and contains undated material. The Class Notes subseries spans 1978 to 2016 and contains undated material. Hull’s notes from teaching are in this subseries. The Writings and Speeches subseries spans 1980 to 2017 and contains undated material. This subseries contains many lectures, articles, and related material from Hull’s life. The Funerals and Tributes subseries spans 1990 to 2020 and contains funeral sermons and tributes to various people. The Sermons subseries spans 1966 to 2021 and contains undated material. This subseries contains many of Hull’s sermons from throughout his time in ministry and as a professor preaching at area churches. The Meditations and Prayers subseries spans 1970 to 2020 and contains undated material. This subseries contains various communion meditations, offering meditations, and similar church service-related material. The Emmanuel subseries spans 1986 to 2015 and contains undated material. This subseries includes items related to Hull’s time as a professor at Emmanuel Christian Seminary. The Subject Files series spans 1973 to 2017 and contains undated material. This subseries includes a paper from Hull’s doctoral work, information on his retirement, and personal material.

The Digitized Files series spans 1968 to 2021 and contains undated material. This series was digitized from physical items that the family wanted returned. A variety of materials are in this series, including Sunday School lessons, funeral sermons, sermons, and writings. The only items that were not fully duplicated were copies of the Christian Standard that did not have any writings by Hull in them. Instead, the covers were digitized for reference purposes.

The Born-Digital Files series spans 2000 to 2021. This series contains many of the same types of materials as the other two series, just more recent and born-digital in format.

Collection is open for research with the exception of one folder of tax information. Please note that the majority of the collection can only be accessed on select on-campus computers.
