Abstract

In the ever-changing political and social landscape of the modern world, church leaders and Christians found in the metropolitan areas of the United States have debated about methodology when it comes to establishing and sustaining church growth. By researching successful church growth methods used by urban church leaders and congregations and evaluating the implications and effects of overtly moralistic decisions made by growing churches, I will determine which methods are proven to be the most successful and sustainable. I will compare two theories of church growth that serve as an umbrella term for all types of church growth theories: secular church growth theory and scriptural church growth theory. By comparing and contrasting the two theories and studying the effects of other factors that potentially affect the urban church growth movement, I will determine whether or not certain types of church growth theories and outside factors affect the sustainability of church growth.
