Abstract:
This collection is made up of papers from William Dennis Helsabeck Jr, who taught at Milligan in the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. The collection includes historical documents concerning Milligan and the Stone-Campbell Movement, personal documents including biographical information and correspondence, and memorabilia from several of his years at Milligan. His father, William Dennis Helsabeck Sr., also taught at Milligan from 1963-1984. Documents concerning him are in the collection as well.
Biographical Note:
William Dennis Helsabeck Jr. was born in 1940. He grew up in North Carolina, Indiana, and Wisconsin. He studied in Wisconsin, Indiana, Oregon, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Before coming to Milligan, he was a teacher and counselor at a high school in Green Bay, Wisconsin, served two years as director of high school relations for the University for Wisconsin-Madison, and served nine years as history professor at Northwest Christian College. He briefly taught at Milligan from 1982 to 1984 after teaching part-time at Milligan in the 1981-1982 year. Then, from 1984-1987, he was on the faculty of Kenmore Christian College in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He is recognized as a key historian of the Stone-Campbell Movement and taught Stone-Campbell and other church history courses at Milligan in the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s.
Arrangement:
The collection was received in two groups of documents. One group was made up of memorabilia in files organized in chronological order. These files were left in that order with the same name. They make up the “Memorabilia” subseries. Of note is the file “Memorabilia Jan 2005-“. It is assumed that this was meant to eventually be labeled with the month in which it ended. However, it is not clear which month that was. The two other series, “Historical Documents” and “Personal Documents” were organized from a group of papers that were unorganized when received. “Historical Documents” is organized further into the files “Milligan History” and “Restoration/Stone-Campbell History.” “Personal Documents” is organized further into the files “Personal and Family Biography” and “Writings and Correspondence.” Each of the files in these two series have been ordered chronologically when possible. The Photos series is in one folder containing the photos in the collection. It is stored in the photo archives room, separate from the rest of the collection.
Scope and Content Note:
The papers of William Dennis Helsabeck, Jr. are organized into four series: Historical Documents, Personal Documents, Memorabilia, and Photos.
The Historical Documents series spans 1926-2021 and contains documents concerning Milligan’s history and the Restoration Movement’s history. This includes documents of events, newspaper articles, editorials, and Mr. Helsabeck’s own written documents.
The Personal Documents series spans 1947-2015 and contains documents about his and family as well as correspondence and some of his written literature.
The Memorabilia series spans 1981-2019. Each folder includes documents such as event programs, newspaper articles, and correspondence.
The Photos series spans 1933-2015 and contains photos of Milligan, Emmanuel, and the Helsabeck family.
Of particular note in the Historical Documents series are a few primary documents concerning Churches of Christ business, including a committee correspondence from 1926. In the Personal Documents series is an autobiographical account of Dennis William Helsabeck Sr., Dennis Jr.’s father. One helpful resource is Mr. Helsabeck’s annual newsletters he wrote for friends and family. They give cursory information on what he was doing each year. They can be found in most of the Memorabilia files.
