Abstract:

This Collection contains the original and published cartoons of Political Cartoonist and Milligan alumnus, Dan Foote. Most of his original drawings were for publication in the Dallas Times Herald, but there are publications from other well-known news organizations such as the Washington Post, CNN, and Newsweek. This collection also includes some of Foote’s early original drawings for the Milligan Stampede and various other Milligan publications.

Biographical Note:

Dan Foote attended Milligan College (now Milligan University) from 1979-1981 where he first took an interest in drawing political cartoons. He got his start drawing cartoons for Milligan College events and the Milligan Stampede. Though he originally came to Milligan intending to focus on Theatre, Foote credits God with sending his life on a different path and he was offered a job as a political cartoonist following his graduation. He is widely respected in his field, winning Dallas Press Club’s Best Cartoon Award in 1990 and receiving an honorable mention in the Fischetti Cartoon Competition. His work has been published in many national and international news publications including the Dallas Times Herald (where he was employed from 1989-1991), The Washington Post, US News, Newsweek, and The Wall Street Journal. He is also the author of many children’s books and screenplays. Foote now serves as the Men’s Community Pastor of Flatirons Community Church in Lafayette, Colorado. He met his wife, Amy, at Milligan College and they now have two children, Ben and Katie.

The Dan Foote Collection is organized into four series: Original Drawings, Published Cartoons, Various Publications, and Dallas Times Herald Editorial Pages. Original Drawings and Published Cartoons are arranged chronologically; Various Publications is arranged alphabetically by publication title.

Scope and Content Note:

The Dan Foote Collection is organized into four series: Original Drawings, Published Cartoons, Various Publications, and Dallas Times Herald Editorial Pages. The first series, Original Drawings, spans Dan Foote’s time at Milligan through December of 1991. It includes 6 boxes of original drawings, most of which were later published in the Dallas Times Herald. One folder of these drawings includes drawings for the Milligan Stampede. The second series, Published Cartoons, spans January 1991- December 1991 and includes one box of newspaper clippings of Foote’s cartoons. Many of these published cartoons match the original drawings in the first series. The third series, Various Publications, are Foote’s cartoons that were published in magazines such as Focus on the Family, Newsweek, and the Washington Journalism Review. This series spans October 4, 1987-November 1998 and includes a book of Foote’s cartoons published by CNN. The final series, Dallas Times Herald Editorial pages, spans February 1989- July 1991. It includes full pages of editorials from the Dallas Times Herald on which Foote’s cartoons were published. Many of these cartoons can also be found in Published Cartoons and Original Drawings.
