Legacy of Christian Unity: The Stone-Campbell Movement

Curated by Kristen Williams, Archive Intern, Class of 2018.

Starting in January 2018, Kristen began researching primary resources of prominent Stone-Campbell figures in the Holloway Archives collections. With the Stone-Campbell Journal Conference being hosted at Milligan in April 2018, Kristen prepared to curate an exhibit to showcase Milligan’s connection with the Stone-Campbell Movement. Below are selected pieces showcased from the physical exhibit.

    The New Testament Church Pattern
(First Christian Church, New Castle, Pennsylvania, 1946)
This pamphlet contains two sermons Pearl Howard "P. H." Welshimer delivered at the Annual Convention of the Disciples of Christ in Pennsylvania. The first sermon talks about the church and what constitutes the church. He writes, “ The need today is to go back to the first century and reproduce that church of the New Testament. This will bring about the unity for which Christ prayed and will present to the world the institution which was not an experiment, came not from the brain and the brawn of man, but if the manifestation of the will of God and of His Son, Jesus Christ…. We are interested in presenting the essential things of the church and to note the unity that was to be found among the believers in the Christ.”

(Anniversary of Pentecost Committee, undated) Kershner, Frederick D.
This pamphlet talks about Pentecost and what it means to Christians. It gives the history of Pentecost and the approximate year that the 1900th anniversary would be. It also focuses on Christian unity. It talks about how the church needs to get back to the “original unity of Christ’s followers if we are to revive the all-conquering power of the early church.” He goes on to write, “Nothing but good can come from an earnest and sincere investigation of the subject, and here again there is urgent need for the combined thought and attention of the entire Christian world.”
