Abstract:

Coach Duard Walker was a Milligan student from 1942 to 1946. He served as a coach, athletic director, professor, and Head Resident from 1951 to 2001. Coach Harold Stout coached for 24 years at Milligan College (now MIlligan University), beginning in 1958. This collection contains team and individual photos of various Milligan College athletic teams between the years 1926 and 1980.

Biographical Note:

Coach Duard Walker, a native of Piney Flats, TN, came to Milligan College (now Milligan University) as a student in 1942. In 1944 he joined the U.S. Navy and upon honorable discharge in 1946 returned to Milligan and graduated. He returned to Milligan College in 1951 as coach of the baseball, basketball and track teams, and as athletic director. He remained at Milligan for 50 years, until his retirement in 2001. During his tenure at Milligan he taught and coached basketball, baseball, track, cross-country, and tennis, also serving as athletic director and Head Resident in the dormitories. He was inducted into the NAIA hall of fame in 2007.

Coach Harold Stout graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1956 and began coaching at Milligan College in 1958, where he remained for 24 years. During his time at Milligan he coached the baseball team and was assistant basketball coach, as well as serving as athletic director for a time. While at Milligan, Stout’s baseball teams finished first or second in the conference 11 times, and Stout was the Volunteer State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year nine times. He was inducted into the NAIA Coaches Hall of Fame in 1987.

The photos are arranged in one series and are arranged alphabetically by sport and then chronologically.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection contains team and individual photos of various Milligan College athletic teams between the years 1926 and 1980. Many of these photos are black and white, but a few are in color. The teams pictured in these photos include basketball, baseball, track, and football. Because all of the photos in this collection are athletic related photos, the collection is arranged in one series. The photos are arranged alphabetically by sport and then chronologically.

Processing Information:

Eric Nauman finished processing this collection on March 30, 2009. Processing of this collection involved verifying the inventory of the photos, separating the photos by sport, placing them in folders, and boxing them. Several items were removed from the collection during this process and placed in the Subject and Name files. These items include: a copy of the 1968-1969 Appalachian State University basketball record book (placed in the basketball Subject File), 4 slides of Coach Del Harris (coach of the Huston Rockets and Milligan alum, placed in his Name File), and a National Collegiate Letterman’s Association certificate presented to Coach Duard Walker in 1972 (placed in his Name File).
