Abstract:

Dr. Henry E. Webb was a prolific minister in the Stone-Campbell Movement and professor at Milligan College (now Milligan University) and Emmanuel School of Religion (Emmanuel Christian Seminary at Milligan). This collection contains Webb’s sermons and index to his files.

Biographical Note:

Dr. Henry E. Webb was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1922. He attended Cincinnati Bible College (Cincinnati Christian University), Xavier University, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, earning a total of two PhDs. He was a professor at Milligan College and Emmanuel School of Religion (Emmanuel Christian Seminary at Milligan) for forty years, beginning in 1950. At Milligan, he was chair of the Department of Biblical Studies. Webb also wrote In Search of Christian Unity: a History of the Restoration Movement. He was active in ministry, with ministries including First Christian Church of Erwin, Tennessee; Suburban Christian Church of Bristol, Virginia; Central Christian Church of Jonesborough, Tennessee; Harrison Christian Church of Johnson City, Tennessee; and Bluff City Christian Church of Bluff City, Tennessee. He was also active at First Christian Church of Johnson City, Tennessee and was a founder of Appalachian Christian Camp in Unicoi, Tennessee. Milligan University hosts an annual lecture series in Webb’s honor. He died in 2018 in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Arrangement:

The collection was kept in its original order of numbered sermon files. The numbering order was presumably given by Henry Webb. The collection is arranged into three series: I. Series: Sermon Files, II. Series: Sermon Index, and III. Series: Additional Files. While the Additional Files series does contain items that may fit into the other two categories, original order was kept and thus this series has a variety of items.

Scope and Content Note:

The sermons of Henry Webb are organized into three series: Sermon Files, Sermon Index, and Additional Files. The Sermon Files series spans 1940-2011 and includes undated material. These files include sermons written by Henry Webb and the dates he preached those sermons. Dating of these papers takes into account the first and last dates any sermon was given. The Sermon Index series is undated and contains Webb’s indexing of his sermons. The Additional Files series spans 1947-2011 and includes undated material. It includes a register of weddings performed, other sermon notes, and church bulletins, among other items.
