Abstract:

Peggy Rogers was a Milligan student who participated in the Milligan choir in the late 1940s and early 1950s. This collection includes programs, photos, and newspaper clippings related to Peggy’s time as a student and as an alumna.

Biographical Note:

Peggy Rogers (Young) received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Milligan in 1952. She was a member of Milligan's Concert Choir during its early years under E. Gordon Warner and Ruth White. She returned to Milligan to earn her Masters of Arts in 1980. Mrs. Rogers became a choral director in Bristol, VA.

Arrangement:

Ginger Dillon finished processing the 004-06-2006 accession on November 2, 2006. This included weeding newspaper articles, placing photographs in Mylar, and writing a finding aid. Katherine Banks combined this accession with 2016-002 accession from Peggy Rogers’ son Tom. The collection is divided into six series, I. Series: Correspondence, 2006; II. Series: Programs, 1948-1989, undated; III. Series: Periodicals, 1950-1997, undated; IV. Series: Class of 1952, 1997-1998, undated; V. Series: Subject Files, 1950-1997, undated; and VI. Series: Photos and Artifacts, 1950-1988, undated. Each series is arranged in alphabetical order by folder title.

Scope and Content Note:

The Peggy Rogers Collection contains items from a number of different years and two different accessions, one being mostly choir materials and the other being a collection of student and alumna items donated by Peggy’s son Tom. The collection is divided into six series: Correspondence, Programs, Periodicals, Class of 1952, Subject Files, and Photos and Artifacts.

The Correspondence series contains one letter from 2006, written by Peggy Rogers, who gave her permission to have it included in this collection. It contains some of her memories about choir director E. Gordon Warner and his family's involvement in the Concert Choir.

The Programs series spans 1948 to 1989 and includes undated material. Of special interest in this series are the many choir and Madrigal programs from both Peggy’s time as a student and later as an alumna.

The Periodicals series spans 1950 to 1997 and includes undated material. Some issues of the Johnson City Press, Elizabethton Star, Mill-Agenda, and Stampede have been removed due to their unstable nature. Their issue numbers and dates have been preserved within the collection. Several other newspaper and periodical clippings of interest to Peggy are also in this series.

The Class of 1952 series has both undated material and material from 1997 to 1998. The items in this series are related to class reunions and a tree dedication.

The Subject Files series spans 1950 to 1997 and includes undated material. The series contains a folder on football at Milligan and a folder on Francis Gary Powers, the U-2 spy plane pilot shot down over the Soviet Union who also attended Milligan.

The Photos and Artifacts series spans 1950 to 1988 and includes undated material. This series has an “M” letter (presumably Peggy’s), as well as several photos and copies of photos related to Peggy.
