Abstract:

The papers of Henry J. and Perlea S. Derthick contain correspondence, subject files, and books that President Henry J. Derthick and his wife Perlea kept. Henry was president of Milligan College from 1917 to 1940, and much of this collection contains records from this time. Also included in the collection are some items from the presidency of Charles Burns, who immediately succeeded Derthick as president of Milligan College.

Biographical Note:

Henry J. Derthick was born in 1872 in Ohio. Perlea Samantha Derthick (also known as Pearl or Perl) was Henry’s first cousin. She was born in 1879 in Ohio, and they were married in 1897. They had three children, Francis, Lawrence, and Roger. With degrees from Hiram College, and University of Michigan, Henry Derthick became president of Milligan College in 1917 and served in that role until 1940, when Perlea’s health became too fragile for them to continue working. Henry became president when the school was having financial difficulties, but he raised enough support to keep the school open, even during the Great Depression. While Henry travelled around raising support for the school, Perlea oversaw the day-to-day operations at Milligan, including serving as dean of women, dietician, and many other roles. Perlea died in 1954, and Henry died in 1968.

See Scholarship, Community, Faith: Milligan Celebrates 150 Years by Clinton J. Holloway with A. Lee Fierbaugh, Beside the Waters of the Buffalo: A History of Milligan College to 1941 by Cynthia Ann Cornwell, and name files on Henry and Perlea Derthick in the Holloway Archives for more information. Information in this Biographical Note was taken from these sources.

Arrangement:

The papers of Henry J. Derthick had been stored for an indeterminable amount of time in file cabinets in the archives with the books in boxes. At some point, arrangement was given to these items, whether imposed or their original order. A seemingly separate arrangement of correspondence (and some subject files) from circa 1936-1937 and 1940-1941 was integrated into the series that made the most sense for them to be in. Additionally, in 2023, a book of letters of appreciation and a framed letter from the board were given to the archives and integrated into the collection. Thus, the collection is divided into four series: I. Series: Correspondence, 1917-1943, undated; II. Series: Subject Files, 1917-1966, undated; III. Series: Books, 1895-1966, undated; and IV. Series: Objects, 1941-1953. The Books series is further divided intro three subseries: 1. Subseries: Sermons, 1947-1963, undated; 2. Subseries: Notebooks, 1926-1966, undated; and 3. Subseries: Publications: 1895-1944, undated.

The Correspondence series is arranged alphabetically and then chronologically within each letter of the alphabet with a few discrepancies based on original order. Some files were moved around to better fit chronological order, but others were kept in their original place.

The Subject Files are arranged alphabetically.

The Books series is divided into three subseries: Sermons, Notebooks, and Publications. The Sermons subseries is arranged chronologically, while the Notebooks and Publications subseries are arranged chronologically.

The Objects series is arranged chronologically.

Scope and Content Note:

The papers of Henry J. Derthick are divided into four series: Correspondence, Subject Files, Books, and Objects. The Books series is divided into three subseries: Sermons, Notebooks, and Publications.

I. Series: Correspondence, 1917-1943, undated

The Correspondence series spans 1917 to 1943 and contains undated material. It includes correspondence to and from Henry Derthick and Perlea Derthick during Henry’s time as president of Milligan. Also included is correspondence with Nancy Cantrell, BT Scott, students, and the Tarwater family. Additionally, some correspondence from Charles Burns’ time as president is included in the material. See C0135 C.E. Burns Papers for more of Charles E. Burns’ material.

II. Series: Subject Files, 1917-1966, undated

The Subject Files series spans 1917 to 1966 and contains undated material. It contains files Derthick kept on various subjects. Included are items from the presidencies of Charles E. Burns and Virgil Elliott, and correspondence by and with Kathleen Adams, registrar. Quite a bit of correspondence is in this series, but to follow original order, these items were kept together.

III. Series: Books, 1895-1966, undated

The Books series spans 1895 to 1966 and contains undated material. The Sermons subseries spans 1947-1963 and contains undated material. The Notebooks subseries spans 1926 to 1966 and contains undated material. The Publications subseries spans 1895 to 1944 and contains undated material. Items of interest in this series include Derthick’s sermons, notebooks he kept, and publications he had copies of. The Ann Arbor Cook Book in the Publications subseries contains several loose recipes, presumably a collection belonging to Perlea Derthick.

1. Subseries: Sermons, 1947-1963, undated

2. Subseries: Notebooks, 1926-1966, undated

3. Subseries: Publications: 1895-1944, undated

IV. Series: Objects, 1941-1953

The Objects series spans 1941 to 1953 and contains a book of letters of appreciation to the Derthicks as well as a letter from the board in a wooden frame.

Thus, the collection is divided into three series: I. Series: Correspondence, 1917-1943, undated; II. Series: Subject Files, 1917-1966, undated; and III. Series: Books, 1895-1966, undated.

      Scope and Content Note:

The papers of Henry J. Derthick are divided into three series: Correspondence, Subject Files, and Books.
