Abstract:

The papers of Gretchen Hyder highlight a segment of this Milligan graduate’s life in the 1920s, including the letters she received, the souvenirs she kept, and the work she did.

Biographical Note:

Gretchen Hyder was born in 1896 and graduated from Milligan College in 1922 with her Bachelor of Arts. In addition to her Milligan education, Hyder attended Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, possibly the University of California (branch unknown), and Columbia University in New York. The 1922 Milligan Buffalo notes that Hyder was president of her senior class, a charter member and president of the Philomathean Literary Society, secretary and treasurer of the Dramatic Club, and secretary and treasurer of the Periscope. Hyder taught at several secondary and post-secondary schools in North Carolina and Tennessee. Besides maintaining a relationship with Milligan College and President Derthick over the years, Hyder donated some property to Milligan in 1951. This property is where Webb Hall is located. Hyder died in 1962.

Arrangement:

Jim Pattison originally processed the collection, perhaps in the 1980s, and produced a finding aid. In order to bring the finding aid up to current standards and to consolidate boxes, Katherine Banks re-processed the collection in 2023. This involved refoldering and rearranging items to create new series. The collection is now divided into four series, I. Series: Correspondence, 1923-1930, undated; II. Series: Educational Work, 1927-1936, undated; III. Series: Financial, 1925-1928, undated; and IV. Series: Memorabilia, 1922-1930, undated.

Scope and Content Note:

The papers of Gretchen Hyder are organized into four series: Correspondence, Educational Work, Financial, and Memorabilia.

The Correspondence series spans 1923 to 1930 and contains undated material. This series contains letters and notes to Hyder, as well as greeting cards she received.

The Educational Work series spans 1927 to 1936 and contains undated material. This series contains lessons Hyder presumably used in her work as a teacher, as well as student writing assignments and information on an English contest at a high school.

The Financial series spans 1925 to 1928 and contains undated material. This series contains receipts, bills, checks, and other financial material of Hyder’s.

The Memorabilia series spans 1922 to 1930 and contains undated material. In this series are newspaper clippings, graduation programs and invitations, playbills, Hyder’s academic work, and other souvenirs.
